Frequently asked
When do I find out if I have been assigned a room?
As soon as possible. Often you need to be a little patient because we put you on a waiting list right away if we don’t have rooms immediately available.
Can I still register or is it already too late?
You can ALWAYS register. Of course, the earlier the better. In the best case scenario, you should register 6-12 months before your preferred move-in date.
Is there something available now? Can I move in right away?
If there are spots available, you‘ll find them here. If you don’t see your preferred residence on this list, then for these residences there is unfortunately just waiting lists. But it is worthwhile to register in any case because there are always applicants who cancel at the last minute.
The above information applies only for rooms which become available during the semester or which are still available. If you are looking for a spot for the coming semester, simply register using our online form. Then you are registered with us and will hear from us as soon as we can offer you a vacant room. As always, the earlier you register, the better.
I need a room in residence in one year’s time. Can I register now?
Yes!!! The earlier you register, the greater the chances are that you will be assigned a room. When you register, you are on file and will be informed via email as soon as the rooms in residence are being assigned for the desired time frame and we can offer you a vacant room.
What is a housing unit (with 2, 3, or 4 units)?
In short: shared accommodation in a student residence. You have your own room and share with your flatmates – depending on the size of the unit – the bathroom/WC and maybe even the kitchen. Does that sound good?
How can I register?
You can register using our online form. No worries, the registration is non-binding and free of charge.
What are the criteria for getting a room at home4students?
Grant holders are given priority, otherwise we are open for all students 🙂
Do I have to register several times if I am interested in all of the residences?
No. As long as the residences are in the same place where you are studying, you can note at the time of registration that you would like to be considered for all of the residences.
Can I register for a single room?
Of course. When you register you can note that you are only interested in a single room.
When is my room finally booked?
The room is booked firm upon payment of the € 100,- processing fee.
Do I have to pay a deposit before moving in?
Yes, before moving in (contract start) you have to pay the deposit (2 month’s rent) and your first rent payment (= 1 month’s rent).
When do I receive the signed copy of the agreement?
You receive your agreement as required electronically. If you need it, just let us know. Don’t forget that all payments have to be made in advance in order for us to issue your agreement.
How can I cancel a room that is already reserved?
You can cancel your room via e-mail or registered letter. Please have a look at your documents to see when the deadline is for cancelling. Contact our reservations department if you are unsure or have more questions.
Can I move into a room/flat sharing community with my boyfriend/girlfriend?
Yes, you can. You have to note this in the comments at the time of registration. We are happy to oblige if something suitable is available.
Do I have to re-register every year or is the agreement unlimited?
The agreement is always for one academic year, but you can extend it. The information about extending the agreement will be sent in good time in the Newsletter or explained on the notice board.
But students in their first semester can conclude an agreement for two years.
Is there an age limitation?
No. Everybody is welcome 🙂
Can I also move into the residence with a child?
Please get in touch with us because this has to be clarified on a case-by-case basis.
Is there a waiting list?
That depends on the time of year. If yes, then once registered you are on file with us and will be informed via e-mail as soon as we can offer you a room.
Is the online registration for a room in residence binding and associated with costs?
No, the registration is non-binding and free of charge.
Will I share a twin room with a student of the same sex?
Yes, unless requested otherwise (e.g., couples, siblings).
What do I do if I want to extend the agreement?
You will be sent information from the residence management in good time about extending the agreement. If you want to extend the agreement, just follow the information in the email.
Are rooms rented to non-students?
Theoretically speaking, yes, but only if there are still spots available and there is no demand from students.
What must I consider when I plan moving?
- Say proper good-byes to everyone
- Arrange the move-out date with residence management
- Hand over room empty and swept
- Move out *sniff*
The cost for the final cleaning (currently usually 30,- to 45,- Euro) is automatically deducted from your deposit (as long as there is no other damage).
Do I have to clean or paint my room before moving out?
We have nothing against “room cleaning“ 🙂 but you don’t have to pain the room. It should be handed over empty and swept.
When will the deposit money be re-transferred to my account?
Roughly 4–6 weeks after moving out/end of the agreement.
Is the deposit money re-transferred automatically?
No. Please fill out the online deposit repayment form. You can do that conveniently in your own log in area.
Who do I contact if something in the room is not working (light bulb, power outage, stuck door) ?
In the event of necessary repairs or technical disruptions, please use our web portal. This way the damage reports reach our technicians directly. They will endeavour to fix the problem as fast as possible.
What do I do in case of a technical emergency?
Don’t panic: In every home4students residence there is an emergency contact. You will find this information on the information board in the residence and in the information you receive when you move in. Just to be on the safe side, we advise that you save the number in your phone. Please call the respective emergency contact, and he/she will clarify with you what is to be done.
Can I repair the damage I caused?
Even if you are a diehard DIYer that is unfortunately not possible. We have to ask our building services or an external company to repair the damage in order to maintain the quality standards of home4students.
Are my personal items insured in the residence?
Even in a student residence it is worthwhile to take out your own household insurance plan which includes liability insurance. The insurance plan of the residence operator (us) unfortunately does not pay for damage to your property or damage you cause.
Check if you are insured through your parents. With Austrian household insurance plans children are often insured where they are studying. Another possibility is to check if your damage is covered by the insurance of the Austrian National Union of Students (“ÖH-Versicherung”). This third-party insurance which you automatically have as part of your studies covers for any possible cases of liability and also covers some damage which happens in student residences.
Someone broke into my room. What do I have to do?
Stay calm and contact the police. Please also inform residence management. Check in with your neighbours, they are also there for you.
I would like to move to another room. What costs should I expect?
Depending on availability you can change rooms at any time. In this case you just have to pay the final cleaning fee (€ 30,-). This will be deducted together with the next rent. Please note that if the rent is higher for the new room, the amount needed to top up the deposit will be deducted from the account.
I want to cancel my my contract - what should I do?
Like so often in life, it depends. If there is proof for compelling reasons in accordance with Art. 12, para 3 StudHG, you can terminate the contract at the end of the following month.
If you wanna leave us just because, this is possible at the end of each semsester with a two-month notice period.
A written termination is required - an E-Mail is totally fine with us.
We’ve got it. In every residence you can use WLAN ("Wi-Fi").
The amenities vary from residence to residence. If you have questions with regard to parking, laundry room, bike racks, fridges, Internet connection, fitness, common rooms, etc., contact us.
You will find a good overview about all the residences here on the website.
Which facilities/services are included in the rates?
- heating, electricity and operating expenses
- cleaning (according to the service specifications of your dormitory)
- use of all general areas/infrastructure
- internet access/Wi-Fi
- cable and SAT TV connection (depending on equipment)
- furniture
- technical support
Additional costs:
washing machine (1 wash cycle): €2,5 ; dryer use is free
Payment method?
The rent is debited from your accounted using SEPA direct debit. Easy-peasy.
Do I have to contact the dormitory administrator in advance of my move-in-date?
Residence management usually informs you of the date via email. If you are unable to move in on this day, arrange a date with residence management to move outside of the main moving times.
If you are not sure or if you might have lost the e-mail, please contact your residence management promptly.
There is damage in my room that has been there before I moved in. What should I do?
It goes without saying that we are endeavoured to hand over the room to you free of defects. If you discover something, you need to note the defects right away on the inventory report which you receive when you move in.
Otherwise the room is deemed to be accepted and free of defects. The costs for repairs and the like will be deducted from the deposit when you move out. So, take a close look when you move in to avoid discussions later on 🙂
How are rooms assigned?
That’s a difficult question. It depends on which rooms are going to become available or are free at the moment. Special requests are considered as far as possible and based on availability.
But there is no assignment based on programmes students are taking or on their country of origin.
Who will be my roommate?
We understand that you would like to know ahead of time but room assignments can change even on move-in day. We ask for your understanding that for reasons of data privacy this information cannot be provided in advance.
When can I move in?
Residence management will send you the information about the move-in days via e-mail. If you are unable to move in on these days, arrange a date together with residence management that is outside of the main moving times.
What do I have to bring?
Curiosity, a good mood, yourself 😉 and photo ID so that we know you’re you.
You also have to bring bedding, cutlery, and so on. If this is not possible, you can order in advance through our partner Unistarter.
Can I have overnight guests in my dorm room?
Yes, but please inform your residence manager because as a rule the overnighting of individuals who are not residents is only possible with the permission of residence management.
Of course, this can happen spontaneously. We know, we know - that's also fine.
Are pets allowed?
For various reasons this is unfortunately very seldom the case. Contact us.
What are the general house rules? (curfew, nighttime peace etc.)
Each residence has its own set of rules. You can find them at the very bottom of every website or in our home4students App.
Maintaining quiet hours isn’t a bad idea on account of your neighbours. In general, it's helpful to put yourself in the shoes of others ...and that's a life lesson from us to you. You're welcome 🙂
Can I bring my bike to the room?
The computer says no, but many of our dormitories have a bike room.
Garbage disposal, kitchen and room cleaning are handled differently from residence to residence, otherwise we ask that you put yourself in the position of others for the sake of good communal life.
We're looking forward seeing you!
